A huge Texas “Hello!” from your Vice President for Research and Development! Your Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) volunteers have been working in various areas to bring high-quality opportunities for education, development, and connection across the state. I’m excited to share with you some glimpses of those projects within the area of Research and Development.

The Texas Speech-Hearing-Language Association (TSHA) had a great time celebrating the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology for the newly named National Speech-Language-Hearing Month this May. Our committees worked together to provide up-to-date information and fun challenges throughout the month. 

The 69th Annual Convention and Exhibition of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) will be May 1-3 in San Antonio! We are already planning and want to share a few sneak peeks with you so you can start planning to attend as well!

Over the past four years, the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) Diversity Committee has dedicated itself to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within the organization and the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Key initiatives have been aligned with our strategic plan, aiming to create a more inclusive environment and provide valuable resources for our members.

This four-part series will discuss the vulnerability of healthcare, insurance contracts, data collection, government contacts, and contract negotiation. Henry David Thoreau's prophetic statement in Walden (1854), “Men have become the tools of their tools,” has come to be completely realized in the 21st century, specifically concerning human interface with information technology.

The Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (TSHF) was pleased to recognize many deserving research and travel award recipients at the 2024 Awards Breakfast during the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) 2024 Convention in Fort Worth. 

As of June 1, 2024, the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (TSHF) has a new physical address and phone number. McElroy and Company PC is the Foundation’s new accounting firm. 

Both current Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) Graduate Student Representatives came from majors in political science. When we came into this field of speech-language pathology—Emily as a second bachelor’s student and Madeline as a graduate student—we had never heard of aphasia, did not know the difference between a fricative or a stop, and had no idea what a mean length of utterance (MLU) was, let alone how to calculate it. 

Cafe TSHA is an initiative of the TSHA Publications Board. Levity Lounge is a walk on the lighter side. Tips for Tx offers clever hacks to up your therapy game. Tech Bytes covers new and noteworthy technology finds. Student Swap provides student-focused ideas and inspiration. Wellness Corner emphasizes self-care for service providers. We encourage you to submit your ideas to publications@txsha.org for consideration for publication in future issues.
