The Functional External Memory Aid Tool: A Compensatory Treatment-Driven Assessment

This webinar will provide an overview of the Functional External Memory Aid Tool (FEMAT), a performance-based measure that simulates everyday living tasks (e.g., managing medications) and measures one’s use of compensation (e.g., pill organizer). The FEMAT encourages individuals to use memory aids so the assessor can observe where the breakdown occurs and better understand real-world performance to inform treatment planning and measure compensatory outcomes.

This session focuses on the importance of using a multidisciplinary team approach using observational assessments, caregiver interviews, functional measures, standard evaluation, and multimodal communication methods, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
