Celebration and excitement were evident at the annual Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) and Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (TSHF) 2024 Awards Breakfast during the TSHA 2024 Convention in Fort Worth this past February. The following TSHF service and education awards were bestowed on highly qualified recipients.
The Burtis-Vogel/Elkins (BVE) Community Service Award is intended to advance the work of speech-language pathologists who exceed expectations in providing services that benefit the community at large or who advance the field of speech-language pathology. This year’s award went to Ana Paula Mumy for her non-profit, Spero Stuttering, Inc., an organization which has a vision to help, empower, and advocate for the stuttering community and their families by equipping those who work with people who stutter with quality training, resources, guidance, and incentives for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to prioritize stuttering as a focus area in order to enhance the quality of services available and advocate for the stuttering community. Spero Stuttering, Inc. collaborates with SLPs, other individuals, and community and nonprofit organizations to improve practitioner competency through education and to overcome barriers to high-quality treatment access.
The Carolyn Wells Service Award was established to honor those who provide extraordinary service to TSHF. Recipients may be recommended by any member of the TSHF Board and are voted on by the entire voting board. This year’s award went to Sherry Sancibrian for her years of invaluable support, wise counsel, expertise, and dedication to TSHF.
The Judson Erik Mount Memorial Fund is a newly established fund that supports a speech-language pathologist or audiologist who is providing services to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces or is a speech-language pathologist or audiologist who is a U.S. Armed Forces veteran or is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This year’s award went to Wendy Sprague of Fort Worth ISD.
The Cherry Wright Texas Educational Loan Support Trust supplements payment of educational loans for speech-language pathologists and audiologists employed in a public-school setting in the state of Texas. This year’s recipients were Jessica Angeles, Medina Valley ISD; Erika Hayes, North East ISD; Rachel Keithley, Comal ISD; Kristina Monsivaiz, Mesquite ISD; Rebekah Peters, Mesquite ISD; and Bailey Voights, Fort Worth ISD.
