TSHA Diversity Committee: Four Years of Progress

By: Adanna Burrell, MS, CCC-SLP, Diversity Committee Co-Chair

Over the past four years, the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA) Diversity Committee has dedicated itself to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within the organization and the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Key initiatives have been aligned with our strategic plan, aiming to create a more inclusive environment and provide valuable resources for our members.

A significant focus has been on developing and operationalizing an organizational structure, communication strategies, and a culture that supports DEIB. This involved implementing practices that ensure all members feel valued and respected. The committee's efforts have fostered a culture in which diverse voices are heard and celebrated.

To encourage individuals with diverse identities to enter the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology, the committee developed various tools and resources. These resources help members advocate for the professions among diverse communities, showcase the career opportunities available, and provide support for prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds. The comprehensive list of resources for members also offers guidance on best practices for promoting diversity and inclusion within their professional settings.

One of our notable achievements was hosting three Diversity Forums during the 2022, 2023, and 2024 TSHA Conventions. These forums provided a platform for open dialogue and exchange of ideas on DEIB issues, allowing members to share experiences and strategies for fostering inclusivity in their practices and communities. We also hosted our first Student Forum in November 2023 at which we discussed transitioning from graduate student to early career professional. The committee looks forward to hosting future Student Forums focused on establishing member connections and mentorship.

In terms of education, the committee will continue collaborating on continuing education opportunities on DEIB with the CLD Committee, Research and Development vice presidency, and all other committees to integrate DEIB topics into TSHA’s educational activities. This will equip members with the knowledge and skills to promote inclusive practices in their professional lives.

Additionally, the committee worked together to create an Inclusive Diversity Statement, which underscores our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment: “TSHA promotes an environment of anti-racism and belonging by developing and operationalizing an organizational structure committed to the ongoing process of fostering an equitable, accessible, and inclusive professional community for an increasingly diverse TSHA membership. We are dedicated to educating and empowering our membership as well as eliminating barriers and providing opportunities for current and future clinicians by encouraging culturally responsive education and clinical practices that honor culturally and linguistically diverse communities.”

Through these initiatives, the TSHA Diversity Committee has made significant strides in advancing DEIB within the organization and the broader fields. By continuing to prioritize these efforts, TSHA is better equipped to serve its members and the communities that rely on the essential services of speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
